Local Laws 92 and 94
Since November 15, 2019, New York City requires new buildings and existing buildings replacing the entire roof deck to install solar, a green roof or both. Elevated racking adds usable area above equipment.
Dense, mechanical-heavy roofs
Cooling towers, bulkheads and HVAC leave little open roof. Canopies stand 3 to 20 ft above it, depending on the system.

Do NYC Local Laws 92 and 94 require solar on my roof?
They require solar, a green roof or both on new buildings and on existing buildings that replace the entire roof deck, with exemptions defined by the Department of Buildings. Confirm your building’s obligations with your architect or the DOB.
Can solar go above rooftop mechanical equipment in New York?
Yes. Elevated racking can carry panels over HVAC, vents and ductwork, subject to structural, clearance, ventilation and maintenance requirements.
